Academy (3rd) XI – Season Report 2015

A frustrating season with availability always a challenge to put out a decent side. 5 wins when it mattered showed that on our day we could beat anyone but lost 9 and had to concede 2 games. A very young team on average with 4-5 teenagers selected each week did well and we can look forward to a bright future.

Vital wins against Kingstonian in the second to last game secured league safety. Earlier in the year wins against Egham,  Kingstonian , Cranleigh St Andrews and Ripley were good performances especially with the bat.

Runs were too often hard to get with the team relying on one or two batsmen to post a decent total. The bowling was acceptable in most games but producing more consistent performances with bat and in the field with a more stable team must be the priority for 2016.

Innings of the year goes to Jack Thomas with 139 against Esher, Alec Goldsworthy had a number of good innings 88, 70 and a number in the 40’s. Dan Jones scoring 50 to mark the first league win of the season. Dan and Toby Elstow also shared a partnership of 183. This sparked Toby into fantastic form with the bat, hitting 3 50’s and numerous high scoring not outs. Special mention to young Ed Milton Seal, who at the back end of the season showed really potential and ability with bat, ball and fine fielding displays.

Pete Goldsworthy opened the bowling consistently well with Toby Elstow and they were supported by Dan Jones, Jack Thomas, Hugo Cooper, Dan Peers and Matt White. Spin bowling guile and cunning was offered by Alec Goldsworthy and Tim Watson.  Best bowling figures Matt White 4 for 61 vs Ashford and 3 for 20 vs Ripley, Jack Thomas 3 for 22 vs Egham, Ed Milton Seal 3 for 20 vs Egham, Tim Watson 3 for 36 vs Ripley.

Overall with the young talent on offer this team can achieve a much better league position in future years and there is much to be optimistic about for 2016. Skipper Dan Jones has grown throughout the season and can look forward to playing at a higher level in 2016.

A special thanks to Geoff Thorpe for umpiring the majority of the games throughout the season.
